The hardware keeps on coming for our local Olympians. Shelburne native Megan Nick became the latest athlete from the region to capture an Olympic medal. Nick has been making a bit of a name for herself in the aerials skiing World Cup circuit over the past couple of years. Nick was one of four Americans in the field for the Freestyle Skiing Women’s Aerials event at the Olympics in Beijing. Nick was able to qualify for the final by finishing second in the second qualifying round, then fifth in the first round of the finals. But the CVU grad was saving her best for last. Her score of 93.76 in the final round was more than 10 points better than teammate Ashley Caldwell, earning Nick a bronze medal in her first Olympics. Nick’s athletic career started as a gymnast at the Green Mountain Training Center During her junior year of high school, Nick and several other teammates went to Lake Placid to try aerial skiing for a school project. Former coaches and teammates say they’re surprised she took the bronze… but not really. Nick is the first Vermont native to medal in aerials in Olympic history. A skier from China took the gold and a skier from Belarus won silver.
