Newport Police have arrested a third man they were searching for in connection with a drug investigation. Investigators say Dakota Merrill, 22, was arrested Thursday night at his home in Derby. Police say Merrill took off after an attempted traffic stop on Wednesday. Officers were assisting the Vermont Drug Task Force and its federal partners in an investigation, and they say Merrill drove away with two suspects in the car. They say he wouldn’t stop for police on Main Street, sideswiped a car in Irasburg and finally crashed into a ditch in Coventry. Police say Merrill, along with Romello Appleton, 25, of Springfield, Massachusetts, and Jacob Roy, 26, of Derby, then ran off. Appleton and Roy were found Wednesday night with the help of a police K-9. Appleton was the focus of the investigation by the Vermont Drug Task Force. Police say Merrill now faces charges including eluding police, excessive speed and leaving the scene of an accident.
