Enough money has been raised to complete the extension of a recreation trail from Montpelier to East Montpelier, the Cross Vermont Trail Association announced last week. The trail will go from Gallison Road in Montpelier to U-32 Middle & High School, over the new bridge and along the Winooski River to join the existing rail trail at Route 14 in East Montpelier. The work will take about two years, according to CVTA Executive Director Greg Western. The association said it has met a $75,000 challenge grant awarded last year by the Northern Borders Regional Commission. It said it has raised the $200,000 needed to complete the trail on either side of the new Winooski bridge from donations from over 125 local people and a $75,000 state grant that was built last summer. “There are plenty of opportunities for volunteers to get involved, especially building wooden bridges and other basic carpentry projects,” Western said in a statement.
